Should writers aspire to be liars or brazen bullshit artists? In this reading course, we’ll discuss philosopher Harry Frankfurt’s essay “On Bullshit,” first published by Raritan in 1986. Unlike lying, Frankfurt claims, bullshit demonstrates a careless disregard for truth, one that broadly plagues American culture. When Princeton University Press republished the essay as a book in 2005, it spent twenty-seven weeks on the New York Times best sellers list. Bullshit sells, but does Frankfurt’s analysis itself pass the sniff test?
